Mark Zimmerer
After a career of work in art and theatre, I moved to Boise with my wife Sue and our young son Tenje in 2002. I have been the primary caregiver at home, and have taken a part-time interest in yoga as a profession and let it become the primary focus of my working life. I currently teach 7 classes at the downtown YMCA.
I began studying yoga in Eugene Oregon in 1989, in a hatha yoga class at the U of O. Since that time, I’ve focused on a variety of styles, most notably Astanga and Iyengar. I began teaching in Billings Montana in 1995. My teaching style continues to evolve, but is essentially a hodge-podge of everything I’ve learned over the years. I try to gauge each class to the students who are present, so it may be close to an astanga format, vinyasa, slow and gentle, or some combination of all of these, always with an emphasis on the breath and proper alignment.
In the last year, I have begun to focus more on the healing aspects of yoga practice, and attended massage classes at Three Oaks academy of Therapeutic bodywork. This has been a perfect compliment to the yoga classes I teach, as I am able to move someone through a sequence of poses and help them to figure out where their physical limitations are. The emphases in my bodywork are breath work, lymphatic drainage, deep tissue, visceral manipulation, and subtle cranial work. I love being able to help people sink into a deep, relaxed, healing state.
